Yellow panel sweeps CU syndicate polls
Ruling Awami League-backed yellow panel swept the syndicate and finance committee elections in Chittagong University (CU) yesterday.
Yellow panel got three posts, out of four in professor, associate professor, assistant professor and in lecturer categories, while opposition BNP-backed white panel won the lecturer category post in the syndicate elections. The yellow panel also got the finance committee post.
Besides, yellow panel' bagged four posts and white panel' got two posts, out of six posts, in the academic council elections.
Yellow panel candidate Prof Hasanuzzaman (Sociology) defeated his rival Prof Dr Abu Naser Mohammad Munir Ahmed (Political Science) by two votes in the professor category. Hassanuzzaman got 103 votes while Munir 101 votes.
Yellow panel contenders Associate Professor AKM Tafzal Haque (Management) and Assistant Professor Abdul Haque (Geography and Environmental Science) defeated white panel candidates Associate Professor Abu Taher Chowdhury (History) and Assistant Professor Mohammad Nurunnabi (Economics) in the associate and assistant professor categories. Of them, Tafzal got 47 votes, Abdul Haque 73 votes, Taher 19 votes and Nurunnabi 59 votes.
White panel candidate Abu Rushd Jamil (Forestry) defeated his opponent Masum Ahmed (Philosophy) by 12 votes. Jamil bagged 41 votes while Masum 29 votes.
On the other hand, yellow panel candidate Prof Dr Mohammad Abul Hossain (Economics) won the teachers' representative post in the finance Committee polls bagging 268 votes while his opponent Prof Dr Esmat Ara Haque (Finance) got 208 votes.
The yellow panel candidates who won the academic council posts are Associate Professor SM Manirul Hossain (Sociology) and Shyamal Ranjan Chakrabarty (Phiysics), Assistant Professor Manjurul Alam (Language Institute), and Lecturer Mohammad Alamgir. The winners from the white panel are Assistant Professor Jahedur Rahman (Forestry) and Lecturer AGM Niaz Uddin (Political Science).
