Jahangirnagar University made a good start in the Inter-University Cricket Championship beating Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) by nine wickets in the opening match at the Jagannath Hall ground in Dhaka University yesterday.
Batting first, Bangladesh Agricultural University were restricted to 70 for 7 in their quota of 20 overs.
In reply, Jahangirnagar University trotted to their target scoring 72 runs in eight overs for the loss of one wicket.
Other participating teams in the tournament are Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Islamic University, Khulna University, Noakhali Science & Technology University, Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University and Moulana Bhasani Science & Technology University.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Harun-ur-Rashid inaugurated the 10-team meet in the morning.
GAIBANDHA SCHOOL CRICKET
Mohimganj High School defeated Islamia High School by 130 runs in the Standard Chartered Young Tigers National Cricket Competition at the Gaibandha Stadium.
Mahimganj batted first and posted 206 runs losing all their wickets in 33.2 overs and in reply, Islamia were bundled out for 76.
KERANIGANJ CRICKET
Chorail Tarunik Sangha beat Green House Sporting by eight wickets in the Keraniganj Cricket Legaue. Green House batted first and were all out for 190 which the winners successfully chased in the 35th over losing six wickets.
Kalindi Youth defeated Kolatia by 80 runs in another match.
DU SPORTS
Dhaka University Sir Salimullah Muslim Hall held their annual sports competition at the University central playground.
Rakib Doza of Economics department and Humayun Kabir of Social Welfare Institute became joint champions in the annual event and Tauhidul Islam from Social Sciences finished runners up.
DU Vice Chancellor Arefin Siddiq was present during the occasion as the chief guest.
INT'L TENNIS
Six players reached the final round of the Dhaka Bank Tennis Tournament winning their respective last matches of the qualifying round at the Ramna National Tennis Complex.
In the day's matches, Kong Pop (Thailand) beat Vishwanath Savadi (India) 6-3, 6-4; Sen Li (China) beat Mohammed Ashraf Mohammed (India) 6-1, 6-1; Vishwajit Tirumurti (India) beat Yilun Wang (China) 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; Ching Hsu (Chinese Taipei) beat Yen Ju Ho (Chinese Taipei) 6-2, 6-2; Chi Shan Jao (Chinese Taipei) beat Yu Cheng Wang (Chinese Taipei) 6-4, 6-2; and Chieh Fu Wang (Chinese Taipei) beat Yuan Tao Pan (Chinese Taipei) 6-4, 6-0.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarker formally inaugurated the meet.
BIS TRIUMPHS
BIS emerged champions in the Sunnydale 6th Mini (Boys) Handball Tournament beating St Gregory High School by 11-8 goals in the final at the Outer Stadium Handball ground.
Prianka Sarker of BIS was adjudged the player of the tournament to receive Tk 20,000 as prize money.
Earlier, in the place-deciding match, SOS Shishu Palli finished third in the tournament as Ansar & VDP High School failed to report in time.
Private Satellite channel ATN Bangla chairman Mahfuzur Rahman was the chief
guest on the occasion and distributed the prizes among the winners.
DIV III FOOTBALL
Swadhinata KS and The Muslim Institute won their respective matches of the Citycell 3rd Division Football League at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Stadium (BSSSMMS) at Kamalapur.
In the first match, Swadhinata KS beat Mirpur XI by 2-0 goals with Aslam Hossain scoring both the goals.
In the other match, the Muslim Institute edged past Dhaka Juniors SC by a solitary goal scored by Shamim Sheikh.
WOMEN CHESS
13 players won their 1st round games to earn full points in the Begum Laila Alam 3rd Open FIDE Rating Women Chess Tournament.
In the 1st round Rani Hamid beat Amena, Liza beat Doly, Zakia beat Ferdousi, Shirin beat Mahfuza, Masuda beat Khodeja, Mithila beat Protiva , Jahanara beat Tisha and Ahely beat Tani. Eva, Feroza, Liza and Shimmi got walk overs against their opponents.
