Improve treatment facilities at burn unit
The National Human Rights Commission has called on the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital authorities to take immediate measures to increase the number of doctors and nurses for its burn unit and improve the facilities for the treatment for patients.
The burn unit, the only specialised burn centre in the country, has only 50 beds with 15 doctors and 30 nurses where nearly 200 burn patients, on an average, seek treatment.
Commission members Munira Khan and Prof Niru Kumar Chakma visited the unit on Wednesday only to find that over 200 patients lying on the floor in a miserable condition.
They visited the hospital to see a little girl, Mina Akhter, who suffered severe burns in her entire body as criminals set her on fire at her home at a village in Kishoreganj on October 8. She was brought to hospital on October 27.
The commission members called for steps to bring the criminals to justice without delay.
The victim's family has filed a case with the local police station. But the police are yet to arrest any criminals.
