BCL warns activists of stern action
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Mahmud Hasan Ripon yesterday warned its leaders and activists of taking "stern action" against those who would be involved in violence or any anti-organisational activities.
Speaking at a view exchange meeting with journalists, he also called on the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders to refrain from declaring any kind of 'illogical' programme on the Dhaka University campus that would leave thousands of general students in the dark.
Earlier on Sunday, JCD leaders threatened to declare a strike for an indefinite period on the campus demanding assurance of peaceful coexistence and security of its leaders and activists at the dormitories.
Meanwhile, as to the strike, JCD unit President Hasan Mamun told the Daily Star yesterday that they would take a clear stance tomorrow.
"We are observing the overall situation on the campus and will take a clear position through a press conference tomorrow," he added.
The BCL president at the meeting at Dhaka University Journalists' Association (Duja) office said, "We want to ensure a congenial atmosphere on all campuses at any cost. Interests of thousands of general students should be considered first," he said, adding that his organisation would pay the most priority on the security of general students.
Strict action would be taken against the BCL men who would get involve or try to create untoward situations in different educational institutions across the country, he added.
Pointing to the DU administration, Ripon said, "You (administration) go for action against the outsiders who are staying at halls and those who are trying to create violence on the campus. We would give you maximum support to take action against the culprits."
He also called on the law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against the troublemakers on the campuses.
Denying all allegations against BCL men, General Secretary of BCL Mahfujul Haider Chowdhury Rotan said a fully congenial atmosphere is now prevailing on the campus.
"We did nothing what the JCD men did in 2001. We could not even enter the campus for two years. But JCD men are conducting their organisational activities smoothly," he added.
Rotan vowed to resist any kind of conspiracy of imposing an illogical strike on the campus.
