Vegetable prices down
Prices of potato and other vegetables dropped further in city markets yesterday because of huge supply while tonnes of old potatoes remained unsold.
The price of each 80-kilogram sack of old potatoes was Tk 450, which was Tk 1,300 before the Eid-ul-Azha. Tonnes of old potatoes also remained unsold yesterday.
Sheikh Jalil, a wholesale potato trader at Karwan Bazar, said that a sack of 80-Kg potato was available between Tk 200 and Tk 350 at the cold storages in Munshiganj and if not sold it would be rotten.
Karwan Bazar wholesale market sources said huge quantity of new potatoes are also coming to the city markets from Dinajpur and Thakurgaon and the price of per kg potato is between Tk 10 and Tk 12 at wholesale market while Tk 14 to Tk 18 in retail market. The old potato is selling at Tk 10 to 14.
Vegetable vendors at different city markets said the prices of all seasonal vegetables started falling since the Eid.
They said the sale of vegetables is low compared to its huge supply.
Retail market sources said bean was selling at Tk 7 to Tk 10 per kg while long bean at Tk 12 to Tk 15, aubergine at Tk 10 to Tk 15 and bitter gourd at Tk 10 to Tk 15.
Cucumber was sold at Tk 12 to Tk 15 per kg while tomato was selling between Tk 15 and Tk 20.
A piece of cauliflower was sold at Tk 10 to Tk 15 and a cabbage at Tk five to Tk 10. The price of per piece bottle gourd was between Tk 15 to Tk 30.
