Bijoy Sarani-Tejgaon link road opens
Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the Bijoy Sarani-Tejgaon link road yesterday, which will help ease traffic congestion in the city.
The 1.11 km road, however, will open to traffic on March 26, the Independence Day, after full completion of the demolition of Rangs Bhaban at the Airport Road and construction of an overpass at Tejgaon level crossing.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief adviser said the road network of Dhaka city must be expanded to make it habitable and that the next government should give special attention to this issue.
Mentioning that the road is part of projects under the Strategic Transport Planning (STP), he said the STP suggested construction of a number of east-west connecting roads.
The caretaker government has already started preliminary work of mid- and long-term projects under STP, Fakhruddin said and hoped that the next government would give special attention to this scheme.
Speaking as the special guest, Communications Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Ghulam Quader said this road would play an important role in reducing traffic congestion.
The demolition of Rangs Bhaban will be completed next moth and it will take three months to construct the overpass, said an official of Rajuk.
Housing and Public Works Secretary ASM Rashidul Hai, who presided over the function, said construction of the link road was delayed due to some legal complications and deaths of some labourers in an accident during the demolition of the Rangs Bhaban.
A total of 68 structures, including multistoried Rangs Bhaban, were demolished to make room for the road that leads to Shaeed Tajudding Sarani at Tejgaon.
