Expat to die, 4 get life in Sylhet
Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal yesterday handed down capital punishment to an expatriate and fined him Tk 10 lakh in a sensational triple murder case.
The Tribunal also sentenced his wife, two sons and a housemaid to life imprisonment for their involvement in the killings.
The prime accused was on the dock while the others had been at large and allegedly staying in the UK.
The convicts are Haji Mahmud Ali, his sons Enamul Haque Tony, Inamul Haque Roney, their mother Banesa Begum and housemaid Bedana.
According to prosecution, Mahmud of Ludonpur village under Jagonnathpur upazila in Sunamganj district called Mutalib, his son Mujahid and nephew Babul of the same village to his house on the plea of having important talks in the evening of July 7, 2004.
Earlier, Mutalib had proposed a marriage of his nephew Babul with Mahmud's daughter as they had developed relations.
Since the two families were not of same status, Mahmud felt insulted and for taking a revenge he called them to his house and fed them poisoned food causing their deaths the same night.
The next morning Mahmud filed a UD case claiming that the victims had died of taking adulterated liqour.
But during the investigations, police came to know the fact and started a fresh case against Mahmud and his family members.
They also filed charge sheet against the five.
Examining the records and prosecution witnesses, Judge Shamim Mohammad Afzal sentenced Mahmud to death and fined him Tk 10 lakh.
The judge also sentenced Tony, Roney and Banesa to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 2 lakh each, in default, to suffer two years more imprisonment.
He also sentenced housemaid Bedana to life imprisonment and fined her Tk 10,000, in dafault, to suffer two years more imprisonment.
The tribunal judge also noted in the judgment that the then Officer-in-Charge of Jagonnathpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Enamul Haque and Police Super of Sunamganj did not perform their duties properly in dealing with the case and its investigation.
He ordered for sending a copy of the judgment to the Inspector General of Police for taking legal actions against the officers.
