Two killed by wild elephants at Dewanganj
At least two people were killed and two others injured in an attack by a herd of wild elephants in border area at Makhoner Char under Dewanganj upazila in the district on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Abu Talib, 40, son of Fakir Ali of Makhoner Char village, and Ahsan Habib Hasan, 28, son of late Lichu Mia of the same village.
The injured were Soharab Ali, 50, and Abdul Hamid 40, of the same area.
Witnesses said at least 20 elephants from across the Indian frontier Mahendraganj entered Makhoner Char and swooped on the villagers at around 1:30am.
The unprepared villagers ran for life. At one stage, the elephants swooped on Talib and Hasan and killed them on the spot.
The herd also damaged houses and huge standing rice paddies in the fields.
Acting officer-in-charge of Dewanganj Police Station told The Daily Star that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their relatives. Special police were deployed in the area, though normal situation is prevailing here as the herd went away.
