Khondoker, Mirza Jalil vie for Pabna-2 AL ticket
Several Awami League (AL) leaders including Sector Commanders Forum leader Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khondoker and Bangladesh Krishak League President Mirza Abdul Jalil have started mass contact as aspirants for nomination in Pabna-2 (Sujanagar and Bera upazilas) constituency.
AK Khondoker was elected in the by-election from Pabna-2 constituency in 1998 with AL ticket while Mirza Abdul Jalil got AL nomination from the constituency in 2001 election.
Khondoker, who came to Sujanager on Sunday, is meeting people in different unions of the upazila and most of the local AL leaders including presidents and secretaries of upazila unit AL and its front organisations are accompanying him, sources said.
“It is true that there is a grouping in Sujanagar upazila Awami League. But nobody is against AK Khondoker. If he gets the party ticket there will be no grouping,” Abdul Wahab, secretary of Sujanagar upazila unit of AL, told over phone yesterday.
Sujanagar upazila unit AL is facing internal feud as President Abul Kashem and Secretary Abdul Wahab are leading the two groups.
Both of them, however, are in favour of AK Khondoker's nomination in the constituency, sources said.
Bangladesh Krishak League President Mirza Abdul Jalil, also a central leader of Awami League, came to Sujanagar on Monday. He has also started visiting areas in the Sujanagar upazila and meeting people as part of mass contact.
Another aspirant for AL nomination in the constituency, Brig Gen (retd) Zia Ahmed Sheley on Saturday held a book inauguration programme at his residence at village Najirganj in Sujanagar upazila where a few leaders of district AL were present. Many see it as the beginning of his mass contact.
Asked about appearance of several aspirants for AL nomination, AK Khondoker said, “I will be a candidate only if the party selects me.”
