TIB to help RCC check corruption, improve service

Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB)-run Conscious Citizens' Committee (CCC) in Rajshahi will now help Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) in checking corruption, creating awareness among people and reaching its basic facilities to citizens of all levels.
Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton in a meeting with Rajshahi CCC members at Nagar Bhaban conference room on Thursday agreed to work together with CCC and allow it to employ volunteers to detect hindrances to poor services.
The CCC in a research conducted in 2005 identified poor civic services in RCC and since then it has been trying to work with RCC.
The mayor approved CCC's setting up an open 'complain box' on the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) premises, for conducting an information and advocacy campaign among city people who usually go to RCC for various facilities.
“Our activities with RCC will start within this month. We will publish the citizens' charter and booklet on RCC facilities for distributing among people next year,” said Rajshahi CCC joint convenor Prof Sarwar Jahan Sajal.
The CCC also placed 17-point recommendations before the mayor requesting him to implement them early for ensuring basic civic amenities.
“I want to do some good works so that at the end of my five-year tenure, the electorate can say that they did not make any mistake by electing me,” he said.
Among others, Rajshahi CCC convenor and eminent lawyer Golam Arif Tipu, members Prof Abdus Salam, Rustom Uddin Ahmed, journalist Hasan Millat and cultural activist Kamaruddin Sarker attended the CCC meeting with the mayor.
