No transport fare hike
Transport fare hike during the festive seasons, particularly during Eid holidays, has been a regular phenomenon for years. From this standpoint, we welcome the declaration by transport owners that they would not charge fares beyond what the government has fixed. It is heartening to learn that in the government sector Chairman of BRTC has said that stern action would be taken against any bus operator found guilty of charging fares higher than what has been fixed.
This year keeping fares in check should be all the more possible because illegal toll collection has largely been reduced. President of the Bus/Truck Owners Association says that unlike the previous years they do not have to pay in extortion money as high as Tk.500 per bus on a daily basis.
Social commitment on the part of transport owners welcome as it is, we still believe concerted, well coordinated and collective efforts by all concerned agencies would be required to ensure that the fares are not raised. Principally, stern measures have to be taken in preventing the curse of black-marketing of tickets with some prior strategy adopted by law enforcers. Then, we have to ensure all round safety, security and comfort of thousands of commuters. No overloading should be allowed either in buses or launches. At the same time speeding limits should be enforced. It has also to be ensured that the different category of launches comply with the laid down procedures of mandatory security measures. Furthermore, contingents of law enforcing agencies should stand in readiness to help passengers in all possible ways.
Finally, we are of the opinion that the present government is in a unique position to solve this problem of considerable public interest and earn the gratitude and appreciation of the people.
