NHRC body to recommend names of chair, members Sept 21
The first meeting of the committee to recommend the names of the chairman and members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was held in the city yesterday.
The meeting was held at the judges' lounge of the Supreme Court with Appellate Division Judge Justice MA Matin in the chair.
Committee members Public Service Commission Chairman Dr Saadat Hussain, Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder, Attorney General Salauddin Ahmed and Law Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal attended the meeting.
Sources said the committee at its brief meeting decided to recommend the names of the chairman and members in its next meeting on September 21.
The NHRC will be comprised of a chairman and two members. One of the three will be a serving or retired judge of the Supreme Court.
On the basis of the recommendations of the selection committee, the president will choose the members and the chairman whose age should be between 50 and 72 years. They will serve three-year terms with a maximum of two terms.
The National Human Rights Commission Ordinance 2007 came into effect on September 1 for constituting the NHRC, which would investigate human rights violations and advise the government on the enforcement of international human rights covenants.
