Industrialist Murder

Cops yet to find motive

Police are yet to find out the motive behind the murder of industrialist Mohammad Abdus Salam Babu who was shot dead in broad daylight near his office in Kakrail yesterday.
A police source said that they are following leads at the moment and investigation is continuing.
Meanwhile the case was shifted to the Detective Branch (DB) of police from Paltan police yesterday. Apart from the DB, personnel from the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), CID and other agencies have also been involved in the investigation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed said, "According to preliminary investigation, the murder followed a feud over garments waste cloths known as 'jhut'.
However, police are also looking into whether there could have been other reasons behind the murder, a source said.
The victim's elder brother and Yolk Group managing director SM Sultanul Alam yesterday reiterated claims that the deceased had a feud with a local gang over the garments waste cloths.
Babu's other family members, however, could not ascertain any link with the local gang.
DB sources said they are also investigating possible feuds among garments owners and whether that could be responsible for the murder. A DB official said a hired killer group might have been used to kill Babu.
Awlad Hossain, deputy commissioner of DB (South) who is the in-charge of the supervision of the case investigation, told The Daily Star yesterday, "We hope to solve this mystery soon."
Earlier, Rab-3 officials detained eight people from near the crime scene for interrogation.
Sultanul Alam, Babu's elder brother, told The Daily Star yesterday, "Heated words were exchanged between my brother Babu and a local gang, including Salam -- a local criminal -- in front of the factory recently."
He said, "I do not know them personally but could identify them if I see them again."
Babu's mother Halima Samad, however, told The Daily Star, "Though my elder son Sultan suspects a feud over garments waste cloths, we have no knowledge of such an incident. Therefore, we cannot ascertain any cause behind the murder."
Victim's wife Nilufar Salam said she also had no knowledge of the feud involving 'jhut'.
