Over 800 attacked with diarrhoea, pneumonia

With recession of floodwater, diarrhoea and pneumonia have broken out in different areas including Jamuna shoals in Sirajganj district.
At least 800 people mainly old men and children, have been attacked by the diseases in last three days.
They have been admitted to different hospitals and clinics including Sirajganj General Hospital.
Hospital sources said pneumonia has spread among children mainly due to water-logging and unhealthy environment in flood-hit areas.
Sources at Sirajganj Civil Surgeon's office said, the worst affected areas are flood-hit Kazipur, Sirajganj Sadar, Belkuchi, Chowhali and Shahzadpur upazilas. At least 25 patients from these areas go to hospitals every say, they said.
This correspondent during a visit to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital yesterday saw children attacked with pneumonia and diarrhoea on floors due to lack of accommodation.
A doctor seeking anonymity said water-borne diseases are spreading in Jamuna shoal areas mainly due to lack of safe water and food.
Sirajganj Civil Surgeon Dr. Tawhiqul Islam however said there is no reason for panic. There is adequate stock of medicines and 92 medical teams are working in affected areas, he said.
