Battered by husband in ‘illicit relations’


Shamima Khatun, a UN award winner, has been fighting for life in a local hospital after being injured by her husband three days back for protesting extramarital affair, said family sources.
Dr Habibur Rahman, a doctor on duty at Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex termed her condition critical.
Shamima, a vegetables wholesaler, won 'The Most Innovative Business of the Year' award jointly given by the Citigroup Foundation and the UN Capital Development Fund.
She represented Bangladesh in the UN gala in New York at the closing ceremony of the International Year of Micro Credit in 2005.
On return home, she set up a clinic named 'Shamima Clinic' at Noabeki Bazar in the upazila to ensure free healthcare service for the poor.
On September 6, her husband Maniruzzaman hit her in the head and other parts with lethal weapons as she sought an explanation for his relations with a female patient, police said.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital, and since then she has been struggling to be alive till filing of the report yesterday afternoon.
NGO activists and locals including Shamima herself demanded immediate arrest and punishment to the culprits.
Contacted, Shyamnagar Police Station's Officer-In-Charge Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident.
