Nazrul's death anniversary today
The 32nd death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam will be observed across the country with due respect today.
Nazrul, popularly known as the Bidrohi Kobi or rebel poet, had inspired millions to fight all kinds of injustice and repression through his powerful poems during the colonial rule.
The fearless voice of the poet enraged the British rulers, who jailed him several times for stoking people's desire for independence.
Nazrul's songs and poems were also a great source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the country's liberation war in 1971.
On Bhadra 12, 1383, (August 29, 1976) the poet died at the age of 77 after prolonged sufferings. His death anniversary is now observed according to the Bangla calendar.
To mark the occasion, the Dhaka University authorities have taken an elaborate programme.
People from all walks of life will pay homage to the poet at his grave beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque in the morning.
Students, teachers and employees of the university will gather at Aparajeya Bangla at 6:45am and then visit the grave. They will later lay wreaths at his grave.
A discussion will also be held at the graveyard on the occasion.
