'Elected govt to take decision on election'

An elected government should decide whether direct polls will be held in the reserved seats for women in parliament or not, said the leaders of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) yesterday.
They also said the political government should decide whether the quota for women will be increased or not.
They however said the caretaker government (CG) should implement the National Women Development Policy and obey the Cedaw protocol as Bangladesh is one of the signatories to the protocol.
The BMP leaders were speaking at a view-exchange meeting with the visiting UNCedaw committee member Shanthi Dariam at the National Press Club in the city.
Shanthi exchanged with the Parishad leaders about her experience in the field of women empowerment at different levels and assured them of her help in the fight for women's empowerment in the country.
She said the situation of women in Bangladesh is improving but in a slow space.
BMP President Ayesha Khanam presided over the meeting which was also addressed by Salma Khan, former chairman of UNCedaw committee.
