Shukonya: A cultural troupe for underprivileged children

Many underprivileged children have excelled in theatre, music, dance and recitation. Behind the scenes, several cultural organisations have targeted this section. In their ranks is the Feni-based Shukonya, which largely addresses itself to the girl child.
Shukonya was formed in May 22, 2006. Since then, the organisation has regularly held and participated in a number of cultural programmes. "The troupe has made an impact among the inhabitants of Feni through its activities," asserted Samarjit Das Tutul, one of the patrons of Shukonya.
National days are celebrated with plays and recitation, while Pahela Baishakh is marked with a day-long cultural programme. The troupe also arranges programme on "Meena Day", the day dedicated to children by Unicef.
At present, 10 children are actively working at Shukonya. "Besides taking part in cultural activities, all the children are going to school, which is an achievement," said Tutul. However, the troupe faces some obstacles such as the lack of a permanent office. To carry out rehearsals and other official activities, the troupe shares space with Pubali Sangskritik Kendra, another cultural troupe of Feni.
Clearly, Shukonya is in need of a better platform and infrastructure to achieve its goal.
