Road crashes kill 13, injure 50
Thirteen people, including a doctor, were killed and 50 others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Netrakona, Savar and Bogra yesterday.
Our correspondent in Sirajganj reports: At least six people were killed and 35 others injured in separate road accidents in the district in the morning.
Five of them died in a collision between a bus and a truck on Dhaka-Bogra highway at Konabari at around 5:00am.
The dead are Dr MA Matin, 55, Alamgir Hossain, 38, Muktar Hossain, 35, and Akher Ali, 40. Identity of other victim could not be known.
All the four victims hailed from Lalmonirhat. Dr MA Matin was serving at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Police and eyewitnesses said a Dhaka-bound bus from Lalmonirhat collided head-on with a goods-laden truck on the highway to the west of Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, killing two people on the spot. Another victim died on the way to hospital and two more died at Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. Some 35 people were also injured in the accident.
The injured were taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, Kamarkhanda Upazila Health Complex and Dhaka Hospital for treatment.
Condition of four people was stated to be critical.
Some of the injured people said the accident occurred due to reckless driving amid torrential rain.
They also said that some locals took away their cash and valuables in the name of rescue operation.
In another accident, a housewife was crushed to death under the wheels of a bus on Sirajganj-Kazipur road at Shimuldair at around 9:00am.
A Sirajganj-bound bus knocked Umme Kulsum, 45, wife of Dabir Uddin, down when she was crossing the road.
Police sent all the bodies to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Two cases were lodged with the police stations.
Our correspondent in Netrakona adds: Two people were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents in Kendua and Durgapur in the morning.
Police said a tempo passenger was killed and 10 others were injured when a passenger bus rammed the three-wheeler on Netrakona-Kendua road at Bodarbazar at about 6:30am.
The dead was identified as Elahi Nawas, 45, of village Baltoli.
Seriously injured Raham Ali, Abdul Khaleque, Niamat Hossain and Rahima Khatun were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Police seized the bus, but its driver managed to flee.
In the other incident, a woman was killed and 15 others injured when a bus fell into a roadside paddy field at Krisnarchor in Durgapur at about 9:00am.
The dead was identified as Nurjahan Begum, 55, of village Bagarhati.
Police said the bus was coming to Netrakona from Durgapur, but the driver lost control of the bus when it reached Krisnarchor.
Seriously injured Arman Khan, Lokshan Mia, Nurunnabi, Saleha Khatun, Rahela Akter and Amena Begum were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Police seized the bus, but the driver managed to flee.
UNB from Savar reports: Three day labourers, including two women, were killed and five others injured when a truck ran over them near Salehpur bridge on Dhaka-Aricha highway yesterday.
The dead were identified as Johura Begum, 42, Jharna Akther, 22 and Golamddin,55, -- all hailed from Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district.
Sources said the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound goods-laden truck knocked down the day labourers after its driver lost control over the steering and fell into a ditch, leaving three people dead on the spot at about 7:45am.
Five other day labourers were also injured in the accident.
Staff Correspondent from Bogra adds: Two people were killed in a road accident on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway in Bogra yesterday.
The dead were identified as Fazlur Rahman, 36, and Sohel, 20 of Naogaon.
The accident occurred when a cement-laden truck turned upside down and hit a roadside tree as its driver lost his control over the steering near Sherpur Upazila on its way to Noagaon from Dhaka, leaving Fazlur and Sohel dead on the spot.
