Preserve heritage of old Dhaka
Speakers at the launching ceremony of a little magazine yesterday said everybody should work unitedly to preserve the heritage, tradition, culture and environment of old Dhaka.
"Today's Dhaka is not the same as what it used to be. Today the city is exposed to air, noise and water pollution. But it has many prides, including the Language Movement of 1952 and War of Liberation in 1971. People will always remember the city for these prides," said noted writer Selina Hossain at the publication ceremony of 'Dhaka Traimasik', a quarterly.
The theme of the first issue of the magazine is 'Dhakar Smriti' (the memory of Dhaka).
Speaking as the special guest, Selina Hossain said change is a common phenomenon of a city. "If the residents from a particular area of old Dhaka could be removed and declared it as a museum, the people could witness the real picture of old Dhaka."
Noted researcher Prof Sharifuddin Ahmed said the local dialect of old Dhaka should be preserved. "It is really a matter of concern that the residents of old Dhaka discourage their children from speaking in their dialects."
He expressed the hope that this publication will help the researchers and students do their research and study the works on Dhaka city.
President of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh Prof Sirajul Islam, poet Al Mahmud and UGC Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam also took part in the programme at the Sufia Kamal auditorium of National Museum in the city.
Memories of 98 people, including teachers, writers, researchers, local residents of the city, journalists and artistes, have been compiled in the quarterly, published by Dhaka Heritage.
The price of the issue has been fixed at Tk 250.
