Five get life for killing businessman
A Khulna court yesterday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing a businessman in 1998.
Judge Md Abdus Salam of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict to Zahid, Mukul, Raju, Zulu and Sadril. All of them are still at large.
The convicts were also fined Tk 10,000 each. If they fail to pay, they would have to suffer one more year's rigorous imprisonment (RI).
Four other accused, however, were acquitted.
According to the prosecution, Sheikh Shafiqur Rahman, a businessman of Jhenidah town, was killed in a bomb and armed attack at about 12:30pm on April 5 in 1998 near Jhenidah Government Primary School's pond. Newton Babu, a close associate of the businessman, was also severely injured in the attack.
The judge also sentenced the five convicts to three years' RI and fined them Tk 1000 each for causing injuries to Newton Babu. If they fail to pay, they would have to suffer three more months' imprisonment.
