Brother says Rasheda died due to wrong treatment
Dr Najmul Karim, elder brother of late Rasheda Mohiuddin, an Awami League leader, yesterday demanded an investigation into the cause of the death of her sister alleging that she died due to wrong treatment by dental surgeons at the Modern Hospital in the city.
At a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity, he said he may lodge a complaint with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) in this regard to know where was the fault and make sure that no one becomes victim of wrong treatment like her sister in future.
“Rasheda was a patient of hypertension, diabetes and heart ailment, but she was not asked by the doctors about the diseases and there was no cardiologist during the operation,” said Dr Najmul.
He also raised a question why she was given general anesthesia for a minor operation in the mouth.
Dr Waliullah Tusher, Dr Javad Mahmud Pavel and Dr Kamal Ibrahim conducted the operation at the Modern Hospital on April 29.
After the operation there was severe cardiac problem and Rasheda died at the Labaid Cardiac Hospital on May 1.
The Modern Hospital authorities said Rasheda was not a patient of the hospital, their operation theater (OT) was given on rent to Dr Matiur Rahman Mollah who was abroad at that time.
In his absence, his assistant Dr Waliullah conducted the operation in the OT, they claimed.
Dr Najmul said the Modern Hospital had some responsibilities as Rasheda was admitted there after signing the hospital's admission form.
Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique of mass communication and journalism department at Dhaka University said, “Rasheda was a bright student of my department. It is unthinkable that one would die due to teeth extraction. So investigation is needed to find out where the laps was in the treatment and ensure that no one meet same fate like her.”
Sultana Lutfunnesa, sister-in-law of Rasheda, was also present at the press conference.
