3 food staff, trader charge-sheeted in rice theft case
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has submitted charge sheet against five people including three food officials for stealing rice from a food godown in Jessore.
Assistant director of ACC Jessore office, Monjur Morshed, who is also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to Jessore Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The accused are Rajgour Bhattacharya, food godown official, Jahangir Alam Sarkar, sub-food inspector, Salim Reza, sub-assistant food inspector, Shyamol Saha, rice purchaser (black marketer) and truck driver Shamsur Rahman Shamsu.
Sources said, on April 19 in 2007 joint forces recovered nine tonnes of rice when it was being illegally shifted from Jessore Sadar LSD food godown and arrested three food officials from the spot. They also seized a truck and a motorcycle with its rider Shyamol Kumar Saha, an alleged rice black marketer. SI Golam Mostafa of Kotwali Police Station filed a case against seven people including the three food officials and Shyamol Kumar on April 20.
The then Officer-in-Charge Abdul Kader Beg of Jessore Kotwali Police Station conducted an investigation into the case and sent it to ACC regional office in Jessore.
Later ACC Assistant Director Monjur Morshed investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet against the five people who have been charge-sheeted.
Names of two others earlier mentioned in the charge sheet have been dropped as there was not sufficient evidence to support the allegation against them.
