Robbers kidnap 20 from Bay, coastguards free 31

At least 20 fishermen were kidnapped by robbers in Bay, some 20 kilometres off Kuakata beach, on Friday afternoon.
Among the victims, only Eunus, 40, and Akkas, 35 could be identified till filing of this report yesterday.
Fisherman Md Sahidul Islam who survived the attack, said a gang of 20/25 on three trawlers swooped on 20 trawlers, about 20km in the south of the beach, and abducted at least 20 people besides the drivers of the trawlers.
The gang also looted cash, fuel and fishes from the trawlers and fled the scene, he said.
Lt. Diponkar, staff officer of coastguard in south zone, said they heard about the incident and had already sent a patrol team to rescue the fishermen.
Meanwhile, members of the coastguard rescued 31 abducted fishermen from Laldiar Char in Pathorghata upazila of Barguna district yesterday noon.
They also arrested seven alleged robbers along with arms.
Of the rescued fishermen, 20 were abducted in Bay near the char area on Friday while the rest were picked up last week.
Contacted, Lt. Diponkar told this correspondent that on secret information, they raided the area and rescued the fishermen.
"We also arrested the seven kidnappers along with six arms, huge bullets and 69 mobile phone sets", he said.
The arrestees were handed over to Pathorghata police station, said the staff officer.
