Academic activities on halt since Feb 14
Jahangirnagar University's academic activities have remained halted since February 14 for an indefinite work abstention by Jahangirnagar University Teachers' Association (Juta) demanding Vice Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain's resignation following the February 12 violence.
A number of teachers and students expressed concern that the work abstention would cause lengthy session jams.
On February 12, agitated students vandalised some teachers' residences, including that of the VC, and five vehicles following a student's death .
The student, Md Malek, died in a Savar hospital after an hour-long wait for an ambulance at the JU medical centre.
Juta had stated that the VC failed to ensure security on the campus and was spoiling the teacher-student relation by claiming that the violence was led by Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Emerging from a February 16 meeting, where the VC asked teachers to resume classes, Juta President Prof Ajit Kumar Majumdar said they would review the abstention decision at Juta's general meeting tomorrow.
Meanwhile, criticising the VC's claim, some teachers, including Prof Anu Muhammad, in a statement, said the resignation was not the viable solution and demanded a full-fledged medical centre, removal of the existing proctorial body and punishment to the vandals.
