End extortion or face indefinite strike
Oil tanker owners and workers of Parbatipur upazila yesterday demanded an end to extortion by criminals within 24 hours.
They brought out a procession in the town, held a rally and submitted a memorandum to the office of UNO to realise the demand.
In the memo, they threatened to go on an indefinite strike in northern districts if the demands were not met within the deadline.
Md Zillur Rahman, assistant commissioner (land), received the memorandum.
At the rally, the speakers said that plying of tank lorries has become tough due to continuous intimidation by extortions in the area.
They called upon the authorities to arrest the extortionists who attacked Md Fazlul Haque, general secretary of Parbatipur Tank Lorry Shramik Union and its joint secretary Sarwar Hossain Sagar in the town on Sunday.
“If our demand is not met, fuel supply will stop from February 20â€, said Fazlul Haque.
Among others, Mamunur Rashid, general secretary of Dinajpur district Tank Lorry Malik Samiti and Monjur Alam, president of Parbatipur upazila Shramik Union, spoke.
