Man sued for acid attack on wife
The father of an acid attack victim filed a case with Darussalam Police Station yesterday accusing his fugitive son-in-law of carrying out the attack on his daughter and her co-worker in the capital's Mirpur on Wednesday.
Mariam Begum, a readymade garment worker, suffered severe burns to her cheeks, neck, shoulder and chest and is undergoing treatment at One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital while her co-worker Mamtaz Akhter was released.
OCC Coordinator Dr Bilkis Begum said OCC would legally assist Mariam.
Suffering physical and verbal abuse by her husband, MD Russell, who was frequently unemployed, for seven years of her married life in Gopalganj district, Mariam left him a year ago and came to Dhaka with her four-year-old son.
Russell came to her, promising to change his ways but soon resumed smoking cannabis and taking money from her, Mariam told The Daily Star yesterday.
He abducted the boy and disappeared with some of Mariam's money on January 22 and then carried out the attack, she said.
