Four mills start cane crushing
Production at Rangpur sugar mill came to a halt due to poor supply of sugarcane at the mill gate early yesterday, ten hours after the start of cane crushing, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
The cane crushing resumed at about 2:00pm, said an official of the mill.
The mill went into its 56th crushing season with a production target of 3,900 metric tons of sugar at about 6:00pm on Friday.
The shortfall prevailed due to acute shortage of labourers and transports for carrying cane duly at the mill gate, said Alik Shom, general manager of the mill.
However, the cane growers said that mismanagement in procurement of sugarcane led to the crisis.
It was necessary to build up mass awareness among the growers for supplying sugarcane to mill gate instead of taking those to molasses producers, said an official of the mill.
Meanwhile, three other sugar mills began its cane crushing on Friday, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
The mills are Shyampur Sugar Mills Limited (SSML) in Rangpur, Thakurgaon Sugar Mills Limited (TSML) in Thakurgaon and Panchagarh Sugar Mills Limited (PSML) in Panchagarh.
Of the mills, SSML has set a target to produce 4,250 metric tons of sugar, TSML 8050 metric tons and PSML 3987 metric tons during the current crushing season, said officials.
