11-month-old survives five-storey fall
An 11-month-old child who fell from a fourth floor balcony in the capital yesterday survived the ordeal with only minor injuries.
Tazin Akhtar was playing with her two sisters, aged five and seven, in her Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) staff quarter home when she stepped off the balcony some 60 feet from the ground.
Her mother, who was in the kitchen, and passers-by rushed to the scene around 12:00pm on hearing her cries and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Apart from some cuts and bruises on the head, CT scans showed no internal damage. Doctors said she was recovering well.
Her father Md Khokon, a clerical staff at Buet, said Tazin had climbed onto a chair to ease herself out through a grill-less window on the balcony and her landing was cushioned by grass.
