Five cops summoned for producing arrested judge before media

A Dhaka court yesterday summoned five police officials to appear in person before it on December 6 and explain why they produced a senior assistant judge before the media without taking permission from a magistrate.
New Market police arrested Javed Imam, a senior assistant judge of Bhola District Judge's Court, in front of the capital's Eden Women's College on Saturday evening for allegedly carrying 342 bottles of Phensedyl.
Police produced him before the media the same day and filed a case against him with New Market Police Station.
The summoned officials are Syed Nurul Islam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division; Mustafizur Rahman, office-in-charge of New Market Police Station; and three sub-inspectors Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, the investigation officer; Shafiar Rahman, who recorded the case; and Nur Hossain, who seized the Phensedyl and made the seizure list.
After scrutinising the case docket and other relevant documents, Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam ordered them to appear in court.
In his order, the magistrate said the police officials were obliged to take permission from a magistrate for producing a judge before the media. They were summoned to explain why they committed such offence, he said.
The same court on Sunday rejected a bail petition of Javed and ordered police to send him to jail, while the law ministry has decided to suspend the judge for the allegations against him.
