CDA blames night-time shifting by contractor
Breaking work schedule of Bahaddarhat flyover project, project contractor shifted girders of the flyover at nighttime without informing Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), which was one of the major reasons for the flyover collapse, said Kazi Hasan Bin Shams, the newly appointed project director.
He said preparations are needed for girder shifting and as CDA did not know about the nighttime shifting, necessary safety measures could not be taken.
A CDA source said there was a communication gap between the parties involved in the project -- CDA, the consultant, and the contractor.
There has been no communication between CDA and the contractor after the collapse, Shams said. The work on the flyover is at a standstill.
Mir Akhter Parisha, the contractor firm, was unavailable for comments.
CDA engineers expressed doubt about the flyover's unprotected girders saying if not properly set there is a high chance the girders will dangle.
Shams said there are providing temporary support system by drilling the girders to the flyover with rods.
CDA authorities were unavailable for comments regarding the project's next step.
A team from Rajuk visited the spot to verify the work quality. At least 12 people died and 50 were injured when three girders of Bahaddarhat flyover collapsed on November 24.
