Five police impersonators arrested
Ramna police in overnight drives on Friday arrested five police impersonators with two sets of uniforms, two pairs of handcuffs, two walkie-talkies and other police equipment in their possession in the capital and its outskirts.
The arrestees are Mosaddeq Ali Makhon, Mohammad Babul, Afzal Hossain, Saju Miah and Rustum Ali.
Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, said they first arrested Makhon from the capital's Shantinagar area. Later, the others were arrested from Jatrabari and Keraniganj areas.
Apart from the uniforms, walkie-talkies and handcuffs, a microbus, two knives, a whistle, two belts, torchlight and a signal light were also seized from their possession, he said.
Impersonating themselves as law enforcers, the gang had been committing various crimes like robberies and mugging, Alam said.
"In the name of searching, they often used to set up check-posts on roads and snatched away valuables and money from the people," he said.
"The gang also used to enter many houses in the name of searching or arresting people, and loot those houses," he added.
Syed Nurul Islam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division of police, said a section of dishonest businessmen are involved in selling the uniforms and equipment.
They often supply the walkie-talkies, handcuffs, uniforms and other equipment to the criminals, he said.
"A lack of monitoring is responsible for it," he added.
