Jubo Dal leader murdered
Unidentified assailants killed a Jubo Dal leader in Pasharipara area of Rangpur city on Monday night.
The dead, Rezaul Karim Milon, 40, was information and research secretary of the district unit of BNP's youth front.
Police quoted local people as saying that an unidentified gang came to Milon's office in two motorbikes at around 8:30pm, hit him with sharp weapons and left the scene.
Critically injured Milon, also a cable operator in the area, was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 10:00pm.
Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Sadar Police Station, said the Jubo Dal leader might have been killed due to a feud over cable business in the area.
Milon's wife Jannatul Ferdaus Joly told this correspondent that some criminals threatened her husband with death a few days ago.
Police picked up four people from Pasharipara area yesterday morning, suspecting their involvement in the murder. They are Nur Banu, Limon, Saidul and Shah Alam.
Milon's wife filed a case with Sadar Police Station yesterday afternoon. She accused seven people, including the four, of killing her husband.
Protesting the murder, BNP district unit and its associate bodies held a rally on BNP office premises yesterday morning and called for an eight-hour hartal in Rangpur city on Wednesday (today). Later, they withdrew the hartal, considering the ongoing Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations.
