Tate forms South Asian Acquisition Committee

The founder of Samdani Art Foundation & Dhaka Art Summit and the Managing Director of Golden Harvest Group, Rajeeb Samdani has been appointed as the founding committee member of the South Asian Acquisition Committee (SAAC) of Tate Museum United Kingdom, according to a press release. This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that an individual from the country has been invited by an international museum to hold such a prestigious position.
Tate, founded in 1897, is a network of four museums; it is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British Art, and International Modern and Contemporary Art. According to BBC, Tate is the world's 5th most visited Museum with over 4.8 million visitors in 2011.
The Committee is chaired by Lekha Poddar, founder and president of Devi Art Foundation, who is the daughter of the legendary Indian businessman, G.P Birla. Sir Nicholas Serota, director of Tate has officially announced the formation of three new Acquisition Committees including the South Asian Acquisition Committee on November 1 at a press conference in London. The newly formed Committee will focus on increasing the representation of artists from the South Asian Region and enhancing Tate's existing collection of South Asian Art.
Representatives from Tate Modern have already visited Bangladesh last year in December and again during the Dhaka Art Summit at the invitation of Samdani Art Foundation.
