Dr Kamal wants to sit with AL for 'nat'l unity'
Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday said he wants to sit with the Awami League (AL) in a bid to strengthen the "national unity" process initiated by him.
"We have taken initiative to form a national unity and will continue our efforts to this end. We will also sit with all secular political parties as part of the unification process," Kamal told reporters after a meeting with the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at his Bailey Road residence in the capital.
Briefing the newsmen, Dr Kamal, a renowned jurist, however, said, he will not sit with HM Ershad led-Jatiya Party (JP) as he has reservations about Ershad.
On AL Acting President Zillur Rahman's recent comment that Gono Forum no longer belongs to the AL-led 14-party combine, Dr Kamal said one's words do not matter much.
He said they don't want elections like the previous ones. "We want such an election that will bring qualitative change in the country in people's lives. We want a sustainable democratic government after the election," said Dr Kamal.
He said they sat with the JSD leaders as part of the unification move and to chalk out strategies to achieve the purpose.
"We will continue the dialogue process as we want to have a unity based on principles and ethics and involve people with the process so that they could play their due role in the future," said the Gono Forum chief.
Briefing the reporters, JSD President Hasanul Haque Inu said they want not only an election but also a sustainable democracy where there will be no practice of dynasty, criminal activities and fundamentalism and the elected government will not turn into an autocratic one.
"If the political parties could unite and take a bold stance before the proposed dialogue with the government, then it will be possible to hold a desired election," Inu said.
Senior leaders of both parties were present at the meeting chaired by Dr Kamal.
