5 bullet-hit as Ansar men open fire
At least five people sustained bullet injuries when Ansar members opened fire to contain a clash between passengers and staff of a launch in Patuakhali early Saturday.
The clash left 20 others injured.
Sohel Khan, 30, and Monir Hossain, 40, both of Dumki were shot in the incident.
The identity of the other three could not be known immediately.
Sohel was admitted to Lutharan Hospital while Monir underwent treatment at Dumki Upazila Health Complex.
Victims, police and passengers of the launch said MV Shuvoraj-2 heading for Patuakhali from Dhaka with some 1,500 passengers ran aground around 3:00am near Karkhana of Baufal upazila.
With the vessel stuck, the passengers demanded ticket refund, which led to the clash between them and the launch staff.
At one point, Ansar members onboard the launch opened fire.
Some panicked passengers jumped into the river.
Julfikar Md Gazzali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Baufal Police Station, said they had seized the launch and brought the staff to the police station for interrogation.
The launch was released the next day considering suffering of the Eid holidaymakers.
The OC said the Ansar members admitted to firing only one bullet.
Police filed a general diary in this connection.
