Lightning kills 10 outside mosque
At least 10 people were killed and around 20 injured by lightning at a remote village of Dharmapasha in Sunamganj last night.
The unfortunate incident took place around 9:30pm when devotees came out of a local mosque at Saraswatipur village just after offering Tarabih prayers, said Kabir Ahmed, a member of Joyasri Union Parishad.
Officer-in-Charge of Dharmapasha Police Station Md Bayes Alam confirmed the deaths and injured around 12:10am today.
The deceased were identified as imam of the mosque Keramat Ali, and locals Nurul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Gafur, Abdus Salam, Manik Miah, Badsha Miah, Hazrat Ali, Muslemin and Ripon, the OC told The Daily Star.
Of them, the bodies of Nazrul, Manik and Ripon were brought to Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex at 12:30am while others were on the way, he said.
The injured were also sent to the upazila health complex.
Bordering village Saraswatipur is a remote locality in the vast haor area, the OC said, adding that boats were the only means of communications with Dharmapasha Sadar Upazila.
