Stop sale of chemical mixed food
Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) yesterday demanded the government take a firm stand to stop chemical contamination of food and drinks to save people from health hazards.
The demand was made at a rally in front of Bangladesh National Museum in the capital.
Addressing the rally, leaders of several green movements noted that the government should strengthen its drive against food adulteration as this trend accelerates during Ramadan.
Adulteration has been affecting crores of people in the country and many of them have been dying silently every year, added the speakers.
They demanded the authorities deal out serious punishment to the persons involved in food adulteration.
Stopping chemical contamination of food is imperative to ensure supply of safe food. If it can be ensured, diseases like cancer, cholera, jaundice, gastric, liver cirrhosis, kidney related complications and different kinds of heart problems would be a lot less, observed the green activists.
They also placed an eight-point demand including continuation of anti-adulteration drives round the year, effective implementation of the consumer protection act, forming a separate regulatory commission to maintain quality of foods, setting up high quality laboratories at national, divisional and district levels and creating awareness against food adulteration through the media.
Former general secretary of Bapa Mahidul Haque Khan, coordinator of Bangladesh Peace Movement Kamal Ataur Rahman and executive director of Seba Mohammad Nuruddin addressed the rally, among others, with Bapa General Secretary Abdul Matin in the chair.
