Man jailed in dowry case

A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a man to two years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) for demanding dowry from his wife.
The convict was identified as Zahidul Islam, son of Nazrul Islam of Narshinghakati village in Sadar upazila.
According to the prosecution, Zahidul married Swapna Khatun, daughter of Azmir Molla of Dhalgram village in Bagharpara upazila on December 4, 2009. He took Tk 80,000 as dowry from Swapna's father at that time.
But he started torturing Swapna to bring Tk 80,000 more from her father and drove her out of his house on April 1, 2011 as she refused to bring the amount.
