2 killed in clash over control of disputed land
At least two people were killed and five others injured in a clash over a piece of disputed land at Sidhuli village in Gurudaspur upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Yarul Islam, 35, son of Bakswa Mia and Amir Ali, 38, son of Haran Shah of the village.
Of the injured, Shahjahan Ali, 50, grandfather of Yarul, Ahammad Ali, 42, and Zarina Begum, 38, of the area were admitted to Rajshahi Medical Collage and Hospital while the rest given first aid.
Shafiqul Islam, officer in-charge of Gurudaspur police station, said there was a longstanding conflict between Yarul and one Younus Ali of the same village over the land.
Yarul's brother Ahammad Ali and Younus's brother-in-law Mainul Islam locked in a quarrel over the issue at Manikpur Bazar in the area in the morning.
As the news spread, a group of villagers allegedly led by Younus swooped on the house of Shahjahan.
The clash ensued when the supporters of Shahjahan tried to prevent the attackers.
At one stage, the attackers stabbed the duo with sharp weapons indiscriminately, leaving them dead on the spot.
Police arrested Younus's father Amzad Hossain, 55, in connection with the incident, the OC added.
Saifuzzaman Faruki, additional superintendent of police, said additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid any further trouble.
