A mother of a baby girl, is fighting for life at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital as she was stabbed indiscriminately allegedly by her husband for dowry on Thursday noon.
The victim is Khadiza Begum, 22, daughter of Abdul Bari of Sadek Nagar village in Sadar upazila.
Victim's elder brother Yunus Ali filed a case with Lalmonirhat Sadar police station accusing Ekramul Haque and his parents on Sunday.
Quoting family members, sub-inspector Lebu Islam, investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Khadiza was married to Ekramul, son of Opor Uddin of Nowdabsh Dhuyabari village on July 8, 2008.
Ekramul and his family members used to torture Khadiza physically and mentally after her marriage to realise more dowry.
On March 10, Ekramul sent Khadiza to her parents' residence to bring Tk 50,000 as dowry.
On the fateful day, Ekramul stabbed her several times at his home, leaving her injured critically as she failed to bring the money from her poor parents.
Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to the local hospital, the SI added.
Stab injury marks were found on different parts of the patient's body and her right eye might have been damaged, said Dr Goutom Kumar Bishaws, resident medical officer of the hospital.
The physician also said they asked Khadiza's parent's to take her to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Khadiza's father Abdul Bari said he was not able to bear such medical cost because of his poverty.
Police would take necessary steps against those responsible for the offence after investigating the case, said SI Lebu Islam.
