Change mentality, serve people
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Muhammed yesterday said mentality of police should be changed to make the organisation truly service-oriented.
Police system was introduced in the country during the British period in 1861 but there has been little change in the mentality of police in our country although their uniform colours, vehicles and arms have changed.
"Now 36 years after the independence, we are now seeing a light of hope at end of the tunnel as police is trying to come out of their long-lasting negative image," he said.
The IGP was addressing the district conference of Community Police at Moulvibazar Police Lines ground yesterday evening.
People of rural areas have to face misbehave when they come to local police station, the IGP said, adding that when a police officer will be seen hearing to village people with smiling face, it will show that the police has changed.
The IGP said community police system is meant to make a bridge between common people and police, to remove harassment on common people and reach the service of police to them.
He suggested the community police members to discourage people to file case on trivial matters.
If any riot or big crime takes place in an area, strict measures will be taken against the officers in charge (OCs) and superintendents of police (SPs) of the areas concernede, he said in a tone of warning.
Any policeman guilty of wrong act should be removed from the profession, he said.
Presided over by Moulvibazar SP Khurshid Hussain, the community police district conference was also attended by Deputy Inspector General of Police of Sylhet Range Abdus Salam and Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner Md Alkama Siddique as special guests while Mahmudur Rahman, Moulvibazar district convener of community police and former chairman of Moulvibazar pourasava, spoke, among others.
