13,000MT Japanese wheat for the poor
Japan yesterday handed over more than 13,000 tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh to help around 3.25 lakh poor people while facing natural disaster and adversities of climate change.
Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima handed over the consignment to Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperative Minister Syed Ashraful Islam at the ministry.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with Bangladesh government will use the contribution to create employments for the ultra poor in coastal and flood-prone areas, said a WFP release yesterday.
The aid is part of Japan's overall contribution of $10.5 million to the WFP Bangladesh activities in 2012.
“We strongly believe that our assistance will help to upgrade living standard of the underprivileged and will contribute to reduction of the poverty rate. The government of Japan would like to continue our support in collaboration with the WFP for the cause,” Sadoshima said.
