Law to determine competence soon
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said the government was thinking about formulating laws to determine the competence and qualification of judges before they are appointed to the Supreme Court.
While qualifications required for a Supreme Court judge are mentioned in the constitution, the issue would be discussed with the chief justice and then initiatives based on the discussion's outcome would be taken, he said.
The minister said this during a meeting with a two-member delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), says a press release.
Brunop Carrasco, director of ADB's Public Management, Financial Sector and Trade Division of Asia, and M Teresa Kho, country director of ADB's Bangladesh Residential Mission, represented ADB in the meeting.
Shafique said the government was taking initiatives to reduce the long delays experienced in the disposal of cases.
On when the new International Crimes Tribunal would be formed, he said judges would be appointed as soon as the courtroom is ready.
People working on the new courtroom will submit a report within three to four days, he added.
