3 killed in city road crashes
Garment workers and pedestrians set fire to a bus after it ran over an apparel worker near Eden Women's College in the capital yesterday morning.
In another incident, a man was killed after a speeding truck hit him while he was crossing a road at Malibagh.
Also on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, a hit-and-run accident left a trader dead.
Md Mohsin, 29, was the owner of Ikra Computer and Studio in Daudkandi, Comilla. He came to Dhaka on business purpose.
Around 10:30pm, he was hit by a truck while crossing the highway to go to a friend's house at Rayerbagh.
Mohsin was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital only to be declared dead by doctors, said the friend, Ismail.
The apparel worker, Mohammad Alam, 25, was employed at Ananta Garments Factory located in New Elephant Road area.
Hailing from Panchagarh, Alam used to stay at a rented house with his sister in Kamrangirchar.
Alam's colleague Shaheen Talukder, who witnessed the incident, told The Daily Star that Alam slipped and fell down on the road when he tried to board a running bus around 7:50am to go to his workplace.
After his fall Alam was crushed under the rear wheel of the bus, said Shaheen.
Alam was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead.
After the accident, pedestrians and other garment workers, who were waiting for buses, vandalised the bus and set fire to it, said Azizul Haque, officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station.
The OC said two fire fighting units of Palashi Fire Station arrived at the scene and doused the fire.
The road in front of Eden College was closed to traffic for about half an hour.
Police seized the route no 13 bus plying between Dhupkhola and Mohammadpur. The driver of the bus managed to escape.
At Malibagh, a truck hit restaurant worker Dilip Talukdar Sagar, 40, around 5:30am.
He arrived there from Natun Bazar and was crossing the road, said Anowarul Islam, assistant sub-inspector of Motijheel Police Station.
Dilip was rushed to DMCH in a critical condition and later on succumbed to his injuries.
The truck driver fled with the truck, Anowarul said.
