Enam Chy now moves to unify BNP
A fresh initiative to unify BNP has been taken up by Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, an adviser to the chairperson of the party.
Enam, a former chairman of Privatisation Board, already spoke with a number of leaders from the rival factions of the BNP and urged them to come together for the sake of the party and democracy, said leaders of the party.
He has already discussed the issues that are holding back the unification process and means to overcome the situation with a few
top leaders including Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, the standing committee-appointed acting secretary general of BNP.
Asked whether leaders of both factions responded to his effort positively, Enam told The Daily Star last night, "I think so... but you have to wait a few more days to see the outcome."
"I am trying to do something to unite the party," he said adding that the national election is just around the corner and the party has to be prepared well for it.
When asked about the recent debate over the message conveyed by BNP chairperson's attorney, Enam said, "I think a lawyer cannot give a false statement using the name of his client."
On Friday, Khaleda's attorney Mahbub Uddin Khokon, after visiting BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at sub jail, told reporters, "She has asked to unify the party and urged the nationalist forces to unite for the sake of the party and the country."
Responding to the comment, Delwar on Sunday termed Khokon's comment to the media 'intentional', saying that he did not get any such message from the chairperson through her lawyer.
Contradicting Delwar's stand on the attorney's comment, Goyeswar Chandra Roy, joint secretary general of the party and a Khaleda loyalist, on Monday said the statement of the chairperson's attorney could have been verified before rejecting it outright.
Enam echoed Goyeswar, saying that the party leaders can verify the authenticity of the lawyer's statement to rid the party of all confusion.
Replying to another query, Enam said he was hopeful that his efforts to unify the party would bear fruit soon.
