BCL leader killed in capital
A ward unit leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League was killed and two others sustained injuries in an attack by an unidentified gang at Jurain in the capital last night.
The dead, Sajedur Rahman Saju, 35, was organising secretary of Dhaka City Corporation ward-89 BCL unit.
Locals rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with sever chopping injuries and his back hit with two bullets only to be declared dead by doctors.
Saju's neighbour Rezaul Islam, 25, and caretaker of his house Mohammad Billal, 38, took treatment at DMCH for the wounds they suffered in the attack.
Rezaul told The Daily Star over cellphone that a band of seven to eight criminals around 8:00pm stormed a filed where Saju was playing badminton and threw a hand bomb.
"The criminals, all in monkey caps, first hurled a bomb and then rushed to Saju and started chopping him indiscriminately," said Rezaul who suffered injuries in the bomb attack.
The criminals stabbed Billal in the hand as he tried to save Saju.
Saju fell to the ground and begged for life, calling out a name, “Anik! Don't kill me; I have wife and children.” One of the gang members shot twice in his back at point-blank range.
Contacted, Saju's father Saidur Rahman Sayed said his son might have been killed by the followers of Raihan Khokan, a local Awami League leader and a councillor aspirant from ward-89.
Raihan has a follower named Anik who is a local goon. Saju was a supporter of Mohommadullah, another AL leader and councillor hopeful from the same ward in the next DCC election.
Mohommadullah was murdered along with his driver around six months back and Raihan is now in jail in connection with the killings.
There had been intense rivalry between Raihan and Saju, said Syed.
