Guinea-Bissau coup bid foiled
Guinea Bissau's army clashed with renegade forces overnight, leaving one dead as they combed the troubled west African state's capital for suspects yesterday after thwarting an alleged coup attempt.
Renegade soldiers, some of them demanding a pay rise, had overrun the general staff on Monday and seized weapons from the gun shop before fanning out across the streets of Bissau.
The army chief later said Navy Chief Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto -- who has previously been accused of involvement in coup plans and in the drugs trade -- was arrested for plotting a coup.
Army chief of staff General Antonio Indjai said Monday that loyal troops had defeated the early-morning assault, which came while President Malam Bacai Sanha was in a Paris hospital for medical treatment.
