Three 'immoral' teachers finally getting job
A section of teachers of Arabic Department at Dhaka University (DU) have alleged that the appointment of three lecturers at the department was finalised under political consideration.
The BNP-Jamaat-backed administration appointed the three 'immoral' candidates under political consideration, alleged a senior teacher of the department.
The candidates are 'immoral' as all of them hid information about getting two degrees from two different institutions simultaneously, a practice which is illegal, alleged the teachers.
The decision of appointing the three candidates as lecturers was made at a Syndicate meeting on Saturday. However, the appointment process was stalled for over a year after it gave rise to controversy.
A committee selected the three as lecturers on January 14 last year against two advertised posts. All the three candidates obtained degrees simultaneously from the university and Madrasa Board, which is illegal as per the university ordinance.
The Syndicate finalised their appointment on June 5 last year. But the appointment process was stalled following allegations of violating university ordinance.
Selection committee's subject expert Prof Dr Md Abubakar Siddique of Arabic department issued a 'note of dissent' while a Syndicate member resigned expressing resentment over the decision.
According to the university ordinance, if any honours student studies at any other institution simultaneously, his or her admission and degree will be cancelled.
Sources said the authorities completed the appointment process through doubtful interpretation of rule claiming that the particular rule is not applicable to these candidates.
DU Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz said the attorney general recommended that there was no legal complication over their appointment as the university's 'dual degree' rule is not applicable to them.
“Following allegations from a number of teachers, we reviewed the legal aspects of the appointment very carefully. At last we found out that the candidates were harassed without proper reason,” he added.
