Daily Star in final
Defending champions The Daily Star advanced to the final of the Pepsi-DRU Media Cup cricket tournament with a four-wicket win over the independent in the semifinal at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium yesterday.
The Daily Star play today's final against satellite TV channel Maasranga, who recorded a 16-run victory over United News of Bangladesh (UNB) in the second semifinal at the same venue.
Shrugging off poor fielding they had put up against Naya Diganta in the quarterfinal on Saturday, the Star team, being put in to bowl first, restricted their English Daily opponents to just 62 for three in the stipulated six overs, thanks to a superb spell from Wasim Bin Habib who two took two for six.
Star skipper Abul Kalam Azad and all-rounder Razib proved very economical with the ball.
In his second spell, Shamim Ashraf put the last nail on the Independent coffin conceding very few runs and by sending off opener Jubayer to the pavilion in the last over.
Chasing the target of 63, The Daily Star reached the target with one over to spare as Daily Star's Rakib Ahamed hit a superb 31 featured with four boundaries and two over boundaries, before going to retire as required by rules of the game (a batsman has to retire after scoring 30).
Razib played an anchor role with unbeaten 20 featuring two fours and one six.
However, Rakib was adjudged man-of-the-match.
In the second match, Maasranga piled up 99 runs with man of the match Jobayer and Rashed scoring 35 and 33 runs respectively.
Chasing the mammoth total in six overs, UNB got off to a flying start posting 21 runs in the first over but they could finally manage 83 for two in the stipulated six overs.
